My friend Mike Doughty, known by many for his work with Soul Coughing, is a recent transplant to the Memphis area. Mike wrote an op-ed column in the New York Times this week, with some interesting thoughts on how the Grammys might be made more like the Oscars and how that could help lesser known artists.
Nobody in film was baffled that the best picture prize in 2015 went to “Birdman” instead of “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” In music, however, when an artist like Sturgill Simpson gets a nod for album of the year, half of the music business is happily surprised.
There are many insights in the piece and it’s well worth your time. And let me add that we’re happy to have Mike here in our music community.
